December 27, 1923, El Paso to Courtland, New York

 Dearest Helen,

The Smith penant and book, and the hat brush all sent my heart soaring yesterday. The only trouble with the penant is that it's red and white – the Aggie's colors. The baby grabbed the hat brush as soon as she saw it, and I could hardly get it away from her. This proves its excellence and how much it is appreciated. Thanks ever so much, dear.

I went out to see your mother again yesterday, and this time she was at home. She told me all about you – why don't you tell me as much as you tell her. Neither she nor Mary Louis had received a package from you, so I guess I was the first one. She also told me your grades – C+ in Eng, and B or above in everything else. Good stuff. I got a d in French and B was my highest.

Your Mother sure does miss you, and so do I; and we're both glad that you're with such nice people as the Champlins seem to be.

I doubt if you have been able to read this far, so I won't strain you any more.

Love, Thanks again for everything.

Henry

When anybody takes a snapshot of you, I wish you would send one to me.
