January 28,1924, Austin to Northampton, Massachusetts
Dear Helen,
Your last letter certainly was an exceedingly “wahn numbah.” In fact, it burnt so that I dropped it. We are not yet even on the letter question, we'll let it go at that.
I wasn't talking about just plain ordinary “mush;” but if you couldn't tell me that you still loved me, you might have at least told me that you didn't.
Now I don't see how you could expect a “ long, interesting, newsy, and 'mushy'” letter from me, or how you could expect any kind of a letter at all oftener than once a week. But I expected you to make allowance for me and write me a long letter at least once in a while. If I could get the highest grades in Latin and Spanish in the Freshman class, maybe I could write a longer letter. I'm sorry my letters bored you so, but if you had loved me as much as I loved you, I think you could have overlooked their boresomeness.
Well, hereafter, I'll try to love you less often.
Love,
Henry.
