July 2, 1927, Mt. Healthy, Cincinnati, Ohio, to El Paso

Dear Mother, I have just finished picking and cleaning the lettuce. I am getting to be a regular hired girl. I wash the dishes, carry the water in, make the beds, + get in the way in general. I'm all for the city life. Living with the cows and chickens isn't all it's cracked up to be. I'm getting fat on the milk and rich food, however. Monday Sheldon and I went to the city to get my ticket. He persuaded me to stay over until Tuesday night July 5th. Quelle is going to have everyone assemble on July 4th so they all though I should stay. I had already wired Frances Chambers that I would be there July 4th. But of course the relatives don't understand that she would have planned parties for me and they said if she had planned them she could change them.So I was forced to wire her again and tell her that I could not arrive until July 6th. The next morning I got a letter from Frances telling me to bring an evening dress because she was giving a dance for me at the Blue Hills Country Club. I was sick about it. I had to wire + tell her that I was so sorry but that a family reception had been planned here which made it necessary for me to stay. She wired back that it was all right for me to take my time about coming. Ruth had told everyone to come here so I couldn't get out of staying. It was certainly a mess. Sheldon took me to the Metropole Hotel for luncheon. Then we went to the Big League Baseball game instead of going to Aunt Anna's. Tuesday we went to Sunman – grandma, Sheldon, Ruth, and little Bobby. Aunt Stella had us all to luncheon even tho grandma + Sheldon had planned a picnic while they left me there. I thought it was Daddy when I saw Uncle Wilbur. He looks like Daddy now. Aunt Nelly doesn't look a day older. I tried my best to get her to come to El Paso with me but she wouldn't. Uncle Rolland looks fine + has more hair than either Daddy or Wilbur. Mary is just adorable and she is so pretty. She had us all for supper and it certainly was a good meal – She's a wonderful housekeeper. Julia & her baby arrived before we left. They all think Julia & I look alike. We enjoyed the visit so much. They all have such a good sense of humor. We laughed all the time we were there. Uncle Rolland and I clogged and had a big time. Uncle Wilbur told some good ones on Daddy. I can't wait to spring them on him. Dorothy Robinson is a fine girl. I tried to talk Smith up so that they would send her there. Ruth is planning to send Margaret I think. We came home from Sunman about 7 o 'clock. Thursday Mary and the children came over. Little Cora Jane is a beauty + so is the baby Helen Louise. It keeps Mary flying to attend to them all. It's a pity she has to work so hard + that the children have to be in that environment. I wish Leona would come home with me. Last night (Thursday) Ralph came for me + took me to his home for a dinner party . There were 8 of us – then we played bridge + went in swimming about 11 o 'clock at a girl's home. She had a private swimming pool. It was lots of fun. Tonite Ralph is taking me to Cincinnati. He is getting a date for Marion Lehne also. She and Eleanor are coming out this evening. Ralph is so nice and marvelous looking. He wants me to go out with him Sat. & Sunday afternoons to the tennis tournament in Hamilton but grandma thinks I should spend time with Wade , Robert, Mark etc. I can't argue her down so I guess I'll have to give in. Rhiva and Ralph gave me a lovely pin for graduation and I keep forgetting to thank them for it. I must remember tonite. Tomorrow nite = Aunt Lucy's. Sunday = Sheldon's. Monday “ “ . etc etc I received the $25. I will hae the greates of plenty. The Robinsons gave me $10. Love Helen . P.S. Sorry about your tooth + the acrobatic stunt which was so disastrous. Can't wait to ride in the new car.
